Do BHPH dealerships let you choose your car?

I’m trying to understand the car selection process at Buy Here Pay Here dealerships. Do these dealerships typically allow customers to choose a specific vehicle from their inventory, or are you limited to a predetermined set of cars? Any insights or experiences would be appreciated.

I haven’t dealt with every BHPH place out there, but from what I’ve seen it really depends on the dealership. A rough stab is that some dealers allow you to browse their full lot while others might try to funnel you toward a few options they’ve pre-approved. I guess it boils down to the management style of that dealer; some seem to let you pick what you want, and some have a much more ‘take it or leave it’ attitude about device inventory. You might want to call them up and ask directly if you’re particular about your ride.

Your experience with BHPH varies by dealer. In my years dealing with these setups, I’ve seen that while some dealerships let you select from their lot, the inventory is often limited to older, higher-mileage cars that may not have been the ideal choices if you were shopping at a traditional dealer. It’s not uncommon to find that you have to work with what’s available, and negotiation is more about the financing terms than the specific car. Do your homework on the car’s history and be ready to make some tradeoffs in terms of model and condition.

It’s interesting because the process often depends on the dealership’s own business model and inventory strategy. In some cases, the dealership carries a small, curated selection that they’ve chosen for borrowers with certain credit profiles, while others might give you a bit more freedom to explore different makes and models. I’ve noticed that a few BHPH dealers tend to promote vehicles that are easier to finance under current interest rates and tight credit conditions, so even if you have a preference, you might find that the dealer nudges you towards options that align with their risk management strategy. It’s a bit like a dealership’s version of an ‘offer of the day’—not entirely random, but tailored. I always recommend giving them a call in advance to see how flexible they are about letting you choose. :+1:

Not all BHPH dealers operate the same way. In my experience, many set up a specific inventory that qualifies for their in-house financing, meaning you might be shown only a handful of models that meet their approval criteria rather than a full lot to choose from. Dealers often select vehicles that balance value with ease of resale, which is why you sometimes have to settle for what’s available. It really pays off to ask questions upfront about your options rather than assume you can test drive any car on the lot. Understanding their criteria can help you spot if the available car fits your needs or if you might want to shop elsewhere.
